CONTACT KINETIC DANCE THEATER New York City The purpose of Kinetic Dance Theater is to manifest a creative process and produce original works that experiment with music, theater and dance as moving forms of expression, especially to reinvigorate the classic musical theater idioms. The company is committed to community service through arts education and performances dedicated to uplifting and understanding humanity. DANCE MUSICAL THEATER CABARET Directors/Choreographers Joanna and Ryan Greer have been self-producing original dance and theater works since the 1999 founding of Kinetic Dance Theater in Chicago, where the company was praised for its “accessible, joyous, jazz-inflected dancing both crisp and sensual” (Chicago Reader). Before relocating to New York in 2001, the Greer’s presented several premiere productions at venues like The Performance Loft and Links Hall, appeared in a variety of art festivals including Around the Coyote and the prestigious Dance Chicago and taught dance and theater classes at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Old Town School of Folk Music and Columbia College Chicago. Now thriving in their current New York base, known for “expert razzmatazz” and "Broadway sass" (The New Yorker), the Greer’s continue to present premiere productions called “well directed” and “slick and smartly danced” by Back Stage, with “wonderfully expressive choreography” according to The Dance Insider and from NewYorkCool.com, shows that do “a fantastic job at entertaining.” Kinetic Dance Theater has presented works at a variety of spaces in New York: New Dance Group Arts Center, Dance Forum, Kraine Theater, TADA! Theater, Upstairs at Rose's Turn and Don’t Tell Mama. In August 2007, the Greer’s were thrilled to participate with TADA! Theater in Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Park’s “365 Days / 365 Plays,” their direction and choreography for the national festival seen at The Public Theater. BIOS Joanna Greer was born in Scotland and raised in Louisville, KY, where at the age of 7 – long before the popularity of “Dancing with the Stars” – she began competitive ballroom. She first discovered she was a Director/Choreographer when she staged the backyard version of her favorite soundtrack, Neil Diamond’s “The Jazz Singer” and further explored the backstage vocation at Columbia College Chicago, helming several productions and graduating with a degree in Musical Theater and Dance. She formed Kinetic Dance Theater with Ryan Greer, which would fate them both for original productions in New York. She has also worked as a Teaching Artist in New York for several respected organizations including City Lights, PASE, Young Audiences, American Ballroom Theater (featured in the documentary film “Mad Hot Ballroom”) and the city’s leading youth musical theater program TADA!, where she currently holds the positions of Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer. Ryan Greer grew up on the stage. He began performing professionally in musical theater at the age of 10 in Dayton, Ohio assuming the classic kid roles and soon dancing in the chorus of several musical comedy essentials including “The Sound of Music,” “The Music Man” and “Meet Me in St. Louis,” when he worked with acclaimed Director/Choreographer Tony Stevens. Inspired by the work of Bob Fosse, he developed an interest for direction and choreography himself early on. Before long, he was not only taking lead roles, but also working as an Assistant Director/Choreographer for many Broadway luminaries. He attended Columbia College Chicago, earning a combined-studies degree in Musical Theater, Dance and Direction, and shortly after graduating formed Kinetic Dance Theater with Joanna Greer. Ryan can be seen performing in New York's cabaret circuit with his “delightful display of vocal and dance talent and grace” (Cabaret Hotline Online).
